Trade Shows – A thing of the past?
I have vivid memories of my first trade shows. Staged in dour 1970’s convention centers ruled by burly Teamsters; giant plywood cases stashed everywhere; ashtrays in the booths; opening night wine and cheese receptions; flash outfits stalking the aisles. It was a totally different world. And, maybe, one that is headed for extinction.
In today’s world, every brand has a website. You can place an order with your phone. And nobody seems to have time to walk the aisles hunting for hidden treasures - except in Atlanta…For some crazy reason (or probably because there are still lots of active, independent retailers in the South) the Atlanta Gift Show keeps growing and growing.
Our recent trip reinforced this, and the fact that you just can’t beat the feedback loop created by having lots of salespeople - and customers - and vendors trapped in one place for several days. I suppose there is theoretically some sort of chatroom that could serve the same purpose, but I really hope that’s not where we are headed. It is great to meet and reconnect with our business partners in a good, old-fashioned way.
And…they made me a birthday cake!
